The first Adopt-A-Pest-Plant Program Scoping Meeting was held on February 25th, 1997, at the Golden Harvest Cafe, in Arcata. Present were representatives from several resource agencies, non-profit conservation organizations in the area, and interested community members.
The focus of the meeting was to scope the potential of a region-wide coalition dealing with the issue of invasive exotic plants. Discussion at the meeting included increasing invasive plant funding and volunteerism to the area, creating a map of present efforts compared to problem areas in the region, and setting a goal for a symposium on exotic pest plants in 1998.
Most people on Februarys panel agreed that it was important to meet periodically and share information, but some expressed various reservations about an effort that would encompass coordination of education, monitoring, eradication, and restoration for the entire region. Everyone on the panel agreed to meet again to further discuss the concept of a larger regional effort. This forum is open to all interested parties.
The next meeting is set for Tuesday, March 25th, at 6:30 PM, at the Golden Harvest Cafe, in Arcata. Look for meetings to follow in April, May, and June. Call Dan Brown 445-1973, Brian Crain 825-7919, or Tony LaBanca 826-7208 for details.
