Are you in Arcata and needing a native plant fix? Do you want to see a native plant garden that is open to the public 24 hours a day, admission free? Then stop by the Pacific Union Native Plant Arboretum. The Arboretum features about 120 species of Humboldt County plants, arranged by habitat.
Four and a half years ago volunteers, staff, and students at Pacific Union School established this quarter-acre, native plant garden to provide an opportunity for students and the community to learn about native plants and to create a natural setting for reflective, outdoor, class activities and for science observations. The plants have done their part, growing enthusiastically for the most part. They are ready to show off to their human audience.
You can find the Arboretum at the northeast corner of the playing fields behind Pacific Union School, 3001 Janes Rd., adjacent to Mad River Hospital. If you come during school hours (8:30 am - 3:00 pm), check in at the office. If you want to help maintain, improve, or share this garden with children, call Carol Ralph at 822-2015. If you are inspired to tell the school board or principal what a great resource this arboretum is, please do.
