  • Sunday March 17, 2002, 10 am - Willow walk at the Elk River Wildlife Area. Meet at the Park-and-Ride lot, west side of Hwy. 101 at Herrick Road, the first exit south of Eureka. Led by Larry Levine (822-7190).
  • Sunday March 31, 2002, 10 am - Plant walk ... early spring in the Arcata Community Forest, featuring trillium, coltsfoot, and more. Meet at the Trail #9 parking lot, opposite the 700 block of Fickle Hill Road, which begins just east of 7th and Union Streets. Led by Larry Levine (822-7190).
  • Saturday/Sunday April 6-7, 2002 - Redwood Field Guide Survey Trip to Humboldt Redwoods. All members are welcome to participate. details
  • Wednesday April 10, 2002, 8 pm - Evening program. Dale Thornburgh presents a slide talk, "The decline of the relic conifer, Brewer spruce, in the Klamath Region". HSU forestry professor Thornburg has studied the relic conifers of the Klamath Region since 1965, with numerous publications on Brewer or "weeping" spruce.
  • Sunday April 14, 2002, 10 am - Plant walk ... early spring on the trail to Headwaters Forest, led by Kim Hayler. Meet at the trailhead at the east end of Elk River Road, first freeway exit south of Eureka. From the freeway the road takes two turns that first-time visitors might not expect; be sure to follow the road signs. For info call 822-7190.

  • Sunday April 28, 2002, 1 pm - Wildflower walk in grand fir forest near Hydesville, hosted by landowners Bill and Linda Shapeero. From Eureka, take 101 south past Fortuna, turning left at Drake Hill Road. Drive up the hill to Rohnerville Road, then right 1.7 miles to Puddin Lane, at the bottom of the gulch. Bear right to Shapeero. The ground may be damp, so bring boots or old shoes. For information call 822-7190.

  • Sunday June 16, 2002, 10 am - On Sunday June 16th at 10 am, join Larry Levine for a wildflower walk at the southwest corner of Humboldt Bay, from the top of Table Bluff down to the beach. From Eureka, take Hwy. 101 south to Hookton Road, at the foot of the Table Bluff grade. Meet at the locked gate at the west end of the road. (822-7190).

  • Sunday, September 1, 2002, 10 am - Composite (Aster Family) walk at Mad River County Park, led by Sunny Bennett. Learn how each flower is actually a cluster of miniature flowers.   • Wednesday September 11, 2002, 8 pm - The first North Coast Chapter monthly evening meeting of the 2002-2003 year: a slide program by Chris Lortie titled "Native and Exotic Plants at Bodega Bay: What determines the winner?".   • Sunday, November 10, 2002, 10 am to noon - Fern walk at Lanphere Dunes, led by Carol Ralph. This easy walk, mostly on level dirt road, will feature nine species of ferns, including most of the species found here on the coast.   • Wednesday November 13, 2002, 8 pm - Monthly program: slide talk by Dr. Matteo Garbelotto, UC Berkeley, "Sudden Oak Death and its Impacts on Native Ecosystems". Because of the large interest in this subject, this program will be held at the new Arcata Community Center (off Bayside Road). Business meeting at 6:30 - all are welcome.
