Help for Query Builder - This page provides two search techniques, "Quick Search" and "Expression Search". Each has a separate rationale and syntax, but both are operated by the same Submit button. Quick Search - Each additional term tends to widen the search (except when prepended by plus or minus). [more help for Quick Search] Expression Search - By default, each term (up to five, one per line) tends to narrow the search ("satisfy all of the above"), but there is an option to widen instead ("satisfy any of the above"). Operator Contains, does not contain, begins with, and ends with are currently case-insensitive by default. String Multi-word entries will be treated as if quoted. Do not add quotes. You may enter a word fragment as-is. Do not use the DOS/MS-Windows wildcards, * or ?. Alternative entries can be separated by a | (the "OR" operator), e.g., SIS|HUM|MEN. If you want your search to return an alphabetic range, e.g., only include plants starting with the letters "A-D", add a line in Expression Search in the manner shown below... FIELD=SCINAME   OPERATOR=begins with   STRING=[A-D]  (brackets required). Fields may be tested for the presence (or absence) of content by using a period "." as the search string. About Syntax The search strings generated by the Query Builder will be loaded in subsequent Search entry areas. Users are encouraged to note their format, and attempt to refine or extend their searches by editing these strings directly. For the curious, the syntax follows the widely used text-matching system called "regular expressions". Frame Display Frame options allow you to view the search list and open records on the same screen. These options work best in windows wider than 800 pixels. Reports Three of the available formatting options allow you to select specific fields: "Custom" is best for screen display and printing, while CSV and XML are useful for transfering data to other applications.
